Eating Vegan in Amsterdam - Part 1

Golden Temple has fanstastic vegetarian and vegan food!  It's not cheap, but worth it.  They have a great website:  http://www.restaurantgoldentemple.com/.  Check out their vegan page.  Golden Temple is located at Utrechtsestr 126.

I had the Mezze Platter.  You get to choose four items.  I picked a skewer with peanut sauce tofu and broccoli, a yam curry, chickpea and vegetable stew, and eggplant curry.  All this comes with couscous and pitabread.

Maoz Vegetarian is a quick and cheap falafel shop.  I had falafel and fried eggplant.  Delicious!  I went back for another one a couple of days later.  For 5.50 euro, you get your sandwich and can top it from the salad bar with anything you wish.  Maoz Vegetarian originated in Amsterdam, but can be found in many locations (United States, France, Spain, U.K., Austrailia).  The website tells their story and has all the U.S. locations.  http://www.maozusa.com/about.  This shop in Amsterdam was on Damrak.

Haesje Claes is terrific for authentic Dutch food.  Unfortunately, there is nothing vegan on the menu except a side salad.  I asked the waitress if that was my only option since I was vegan.  She checked with the kitchen crew and then said they would be happy to whip something up for me.  And... it was incredible!!!

First arrived a green salad topped with walnuts, beets and a vinaigrette.  Then came my fabulous vegetable entree.  This picture doesn't do it justice.  There are more fabulous veggies hiding underneath the white asparagus and sauteed mushrooms.  The cook sauteed vegetables in olive oil and fresh herbs - cabbage, green beans, carrots, squash, etc.  It was accompanied by olive oil mashed potatoes instead of the butter and cream version.

The white asparagus spears were HUGE!  This dish was lot bigger that it looks.  My salad was about 4 euro and the main dish was 8 euro.  Haesje Claes has a website:  http://www.haesjeclaes.nl/?language=en_EN  and they are located at Spuistraat 273-275.

Eating Vegan in Delft, Holland

I ate a lot of pasta and pizza on this trip.  Sometimes, that is the only vegan option.

I enjoyed my meal at "Little Italy."  It is located at Markt 9-A, 2611 GP Delft.  I ordered the Espanol  Pizza but asked for no chorizo or cheese.  It was good - tomato sauce, artichokes, green and black olives, and jalapenos.  I also had the salad misto.  The pizza was 7 Euros but I can't remember how much the salad cost.

We had lunch at "Subway."  It is located at Markt 57.  I had the 6" Veggie Sandwich for 3 Euros.  It's easy and cheap compared to other restaurants and we didn't want to spend our sightseeing time trying to find another restaurant.

We really liked this restaurant!  "Cafe de Wijnhaven" is located at Wijnhaven 22.   Great food, service and atmosphere.

We started with Turkish bread and olive tapenade for 4 Euros.

I also ordered the Spaghetti with Artichokes, Spinach (it was actually arugula) and Garlic for 12.75 Euros.  Ask for no cheese.  I threw the left over tapenade in with the pasta.  It was delicious!

Delft was one of our favorite towns to visit.

"Passion for Food" in Bruges, Belgium

Loved this restaurant!!!  Passion for Food is a great little spot for fresh food.  It is not a vegetarian restaurant but has great vegan options.  There is not a big sign so watch the street numbers.  It was really worth the search and it turns out to be very close to Market area.

It is located at Philipstockstraat 39.  The owner/host is incredibly gracious.  I enjoyed the food and atmosphere.  It is a small restaurant but there is a little inner courtyard for additional dining.

My meal was a vegetarian tangine of lentils and about seven different vegetables (zucchini, cauliflower, carrots, etc.) with a little bit of a mediterranean tomato sauce.  Really delicious!  One of the best meals I had in Belgium.  Very reasonable prices.

Zilli Green in London

My husband and I took a trip to Europe recently and had a lot of delicious vegan foods.  I really enjoyed my meal at Zilli Green.  If you are ever in London, check out this great vegetarian restaurant located at 41 Dean Street in Soho.  They have a lot of vegan options.  Here is a link to their website:  http://www.zillirestaurants.co.uk/green/  There is a sample menu on the site which shows how they designate the vegan and vegan options.

Here are the fabulous vegan foods they prepared for us:

Potato Leek Soup

Marinated Tofu Steak on a Salad of Greens, Veggies and Nuts

Penne with Spicy Tomato and Roasted Chili

Great Noodles!

Love these new noodles!  They are low in carbs and calories and are vegan!  Both brands are inexpensive.  I paid about $1.50 per package. The first, House of Foods makes their noodles from the root of the konnyaku (yam relative) and tofu.

Check out their website for more information: http://www.house-foods.com/tofu/tofu_shirataki.aspx.

The second product is from Wildwood.  Pasta Slim is made from tofu, soybeans, and konjac flour.

Here is their connection:  http://www.pulmuonewildwood.com/noodle.asp

I've been eating these noodles a lot with whatever veggies I find in my fridge.

Broccoli, Cremini Mushrooms, Yellow Peppers and Olive Oil

White Beans, Tomato Sauce, Roasted Garlic, and Basil

Cremini Mushrooms, Asparagus and Olive Oil

Vegetable Masala Burger at Trader Joe's

These Vegetable Masala Burgers are delicious!  They don't really taste like burger at all.  It's just shaped like one.  They are vegan and made by Trader Joe's.

Put it on an Oroweat Onion Bun -- vegan too!

A little Vegenaise, avocado, tomato, mixed greens... yum!

Vegan Naan

Vegan Naan is not always easy to find.  Just recently, my local Vons store started stocking this Naan which just happens to be vegan!

If it isn't already available, hopefully, your local store will put it on their shelves also.

Tasty Bite Delivers

Tasty Bite delivers great vegan dishes to your home.  These meals/appetizers are convenient and inexpensive.  I love scooping these great mixtures up with warm Naan.  Or, poor the sauces over the Basmati Rice or Thai Lime Pilaf for a complete meal.  All can be microwaved in a jiffy.  The Tasty Bite webpage has a special dietary section which spells out which products are vegan and lists their ingredients.  http://www.tastybite.com/.  There is also a "Very Vegan" pack which contains a variety of dishes.

My favorites are Punjab Eggplant and Kerala Vegetables.  The shelf stable packaging makes it great to keep on hand for an emergency.

Warm Peanut Sauce

This is delicious and easy!  It all started with a Vegetarian Times recipe back in 2008.  See Broccoli Dipped in Wonderful Peanut Sauce:  http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipes/10476.  I roasted potatoes in the oven for dipping.  My friend made it with the almond butter and I think it tasted even better.

1 cup smooth peanut butter or almond butter
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
3 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
2 tsp. cider vinegar
2 cloves garlic, minced (2 tsp.)
1/4 t. cayenne pepper
